For Immediate Release

McLeod Mercantile Ltd., operator of McLeod Home Building Centre and Barrhead Home Building Centre, is pleased to congratulate company president Duncan McLeod as recipient of the 2014 Integrity Award for outstanding service in the community.

The honour was conferred on Duncan by the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove at its annual fundraising gala on Saturday, May 31, 2014.

In presenting the award, Rotary Club of Spruce Grove president, Nizar Abouchami, expressed admiration for the positive impact Duncan, his family and the McLeod Mercantile group of companies have made in the communities they serve.

“Last year alone, 46 organizations benefitted from the generosity of Duncan and his team [including] many sports teams and organizations, as well as local schools, churches and service clubs.

“Duncan McLeod and McLeod Home Building Centre are an integral part of our city and the Parkland region. Through continual generosity, community involvement and a connection to our past, Duncan McLeod has contributed to making Spruce Grove a better place to live, work and play. He embodies what the Integrity Award seeks to recognize, and the ideals of Rotary International and our belief in Service Above Self.”

Started by Duncan’s grandfather in 1916, McLeod Mercantile Ltd. is the oldest business in Spruce Grove, which was founded only four years earlier, in 1912. Since this beginning, the McLeod family has been an ongoing part of the history of the community, with one of the main roads in the city bearing the family name. In 2009, McLeod Mercantile purchased the Barrhead Home Building Centre, which has further extended the reach of its community involvement.

On receiving the award, Duncan spoke of the positive role his family has played in shaping his attitudes toward employees, customers and the community. “Being able to grow up here, with the tutorship of my grandfather and father, I learned that you just treat people the way you want to be treated. We are very proud to be from Spruce Grove. On behalf of my family and everyone in our company, we thank you for the support of our community and the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove.”

The Rotary Club also presented Duncan with a $1,000 cheque for a charity of his choice: Moms Canada, a locally founded organization serving a cause close to his heart.

Moms Canada offers mentorship and support to single moms with young families to help them become successful members of the community and raise healthy, happy children. Charity founder, Meda Weir, was on hand to receive the cheque with gratitude from the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove and McLeod Mercantile Ltd.
